Sounds like my *baby girl* (now age 23). She went to one of about 20 "middle colleges" in the US. This one is a consortium of 5 local school districts who pool resources and teachers for, well, kids who just don't fit in regular HS, and it is held on the campus of the local branch of a community college, so the kids can take classes there along with their regular HS classes. The school is for kids who are smart but in danger of dropping out, social misfits (I suppose my daughter was officially one of these. She refused to be a *sheep* and as an independent thinking artist, really stood out as she marched to the beat of the drummer only she heard), drug addicts, pregnant teens, etc. It was the best thing that could have happened for her, and she remains a strong, strong-willed and free-thinking young woman.
